As someone who never liked fish growing up, I always loved ‘fish and chips’.  Go figure.  I guess when you take something you’re not fond of and cover it in batter, deep fry it and serve it with french fries… voila… you’re in love!

I don’t know many people who don’t crave fish and chips every so often – on the weekend or especially on vacation…  mmmm… I’m getting hungry.

Another thing you may want to know about me is that I am… <ahem>… thrifty with my cash.  I DO NOT like to spend my hard earned dollars on a bad meal!  That’s why I wanted to be a part of this team – so we can assist others like myself to find a good meal… and a good deal.

Bon appetit.

Ahhh food… much more than a necessity of life…it is an experience. Some people like chocolates, sweets and sugary stuff, while others lean into the  grease and salt. Personally, I would rather shovel a fistful of savory fries and meat into my pie-hole any day of the week.

For me, vacation means not feeling guilty about eating out every meal. In fact, 85% of my focus while on vacation is when, where and what am I going to eat?

Yeah sure, the Grand Canyon is nice… but where’s the closest In-N-Out Burger?

Some of my favorite food experiences while traveling have been:

Sylvia’s (Harlem) – Amazing Mac & cheese.

John’s Pizza (New York City) – The Bleecker Street location.

Big Bowl (Chicago) – Wow… what amazing, fresh, tasty Thai food.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries (Washington D.C.) – Over 300 franchises and growing for a reason.

In-N-Out Burger (Las Vegas) – Animal style baby… animal style!

Fogo de Chao (Miami Beach) – Oh my word… a carnivore’s delight.

Muddy River Smokehouse (Portsmouth, NH) – Pulled Pork… sounds naughty, but it tastes so nice.

Minnie

OK… first off you need to realize… I hate to cook. Did I say hate? I meant despise! If I could eat out every day, I would. I was meant to be independently wealthy and have minions attend my every beck and call.

But… I’m not rich… and I don’t have minions (although my husband says he often feels like one of my minions).

I grew up with parents who worked in the fish industry, so I’ve had more than a few good feeds of fish and chips. Here’s hoping I can find some as good as what mom made.

Skippy

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who eat to live, and those, like me, who think there has got to be something wrong with those other people’s taste buds.

And it amazes me that while our fair province is almost completely surrounded by water, the kind of water that is teeming with delicious fishes dishes just waiting to be had, many locals are not so fond of seafood in general. But… whether you’re indigenous to the area or on holidays from far away, you’d be hard pressed to find someone among the masses who doesn’t occasionally enjoy a perfectly prepared, hearty heaping of good ol’ fish and chips.

And so begins our quest. The quest for the best meal deal around. Our goal is to leave no fish and chips serving establishment in the greater Halifax Regional Municipality area (and perhaps beyond) unchecked. We will consume the good, the bad, and sometimes the downright ugly, so you do not have to waste your valuable time and hard earned cash on a potentially lousy dining experience.

Now, please pass me a fork and a pen… it’s time to review.

Skippy

PS – I like ketchup on my fish and chips, not tartar sauce. And I do not like coleslaw. I tried informing my teammates this isn’t fishandchipsandcoleslawplease.com, but for some reason they insist it’s part of the meal. It’s not even a condiment… it’s a side dish! But I digress; to each his or her own. All this to let you, the esteemed reader know that prior to slathering my fishandchipsplease.com review meal with the greatest condiment ever created, I taste it completely au natural, to make sure the untainted flavor advertised comes through (or not). And I believe my colleagues do the same. Hopefully you will find a reviewer among us who fits your style. Happy eating.

If you ever decide to do a Valley edition, you should definitely check out The Snack Shack in Kentville. It’s this little restaurant in a convenience store, and they make some seriously delicious clams n’ chips.

And it’s been a few years since I’ve been to the Hollow Take-Out in Cornwallis (right next to the old Base) but they used to have some of the greatest fish n’ chips.

You will not have better F&C than at the Island View restaurant in Western Shore. You should give it a try, even though it’s outside of HRM.

Katie… I’m sure we’ll check out some spots outside HRM… and while it would be enjoyable, I don’t envision us trying to comprehensively covering the entire province.

As for the subtle reference to my expanding mid-section… nice one.

    :-)

Give Stayner’s a try. Halifax waterfront near the ferry terminal. Also if you take your show on the road, Murphy’s in Truro and the Seaside Shanty in Chester.
